Adult Healing

When a distressing event occurs, it is common to have strong emotional or physical reactions. A person's body usually undergoes a natural healing and recovery process after experiencing these reactions. It is possible to cope with such an experience and recover from it in many ways.

An event in life that causes us to fear for our safety and places our own or others' lives at risk can be considered traumatic. An individual suffers from a high level of emotional, psychological, and physical distress, resulting in a temporary disruption to their normal daily functioning.

Trauma related reactions

There are several factors that determine how a person will react to trauma: the type and severity of the trauma, whether they have previous trauma experience, whether they are active or helpless, whether they have access to adequate support following the trauma, their personality, resilience, and whether they have experienced trauma previously.

There are some people who are affected by trauma and will have very strong reactions that can become chronic (continuous). If you are experiencing any of the following, you should seek professional help:

  • The event has caused you a great deal of distress
  • Symptoms of physical stress persist
  • Be deliberate about avoiding any reminders of your trauma
  • You are having problems maintaining relationships with your family and friends
  • No longer able to manage responsibilities or return to work
  • You can be easily startled and feel very on edge
  • After the event, you feel very distressed
  • Feelings or physical sensations are too intense to handle

Anxiety disorder caused by PTSD

People who experience distressing events find that their reactions persist for months after the event. An individual's ability to work and maintain relationships with family and friends can be severely affected by severe, prolonged reactions. Post-traumatic stress disorder might be indicated by such reactions.
